Canon SLR Cameras

Well, its nearly christmas and my mum has said i am allowed to get either a Flash (£30-£80) and a new lens (£50-£120) for my Canon eos 500 d…or do i get a Canon FTB - QL 35mm film camera with a 50mm Fixed lens?……Also any good reasons why my Canon SLR is better than my dads Lumix TZ7 10x optical zoom will be much appreciated to go to the xmas banter.
