In order to take professional quality shots, you need to get a complete understanding of exposure. Exposure is a combination of shutter speed & aperture (size of the hole in the lens) and how these 2 combine with the light coming into the camera. Once you begin that understanding then there’s always filtering that can modify the captured image (this goes for both film and digital).
The great thing about film is that it’s much more sensitive to extremes –> film can capture 7 to 9 steps of light clearly while a digital can typically only capture 4 or 5 steps. [You'll understand that once you get an understanding of exposure.]
Learn your manual and then get a book about Basic photography. http://www.outdoorphotoguide.com/gadgets… this is a GREAT book.

Read the manual, and then experiment. Document what technique you used on what exposure so you can learn what stuff turns out like. Then focus on developing those things that will help you most.
